Protein: 10–20g, and check the source

Aim for at least 10g. Just as important is where it comes from — whole-food and quality plant proteins (like brown rice and pumpkin seed) tend to come with fewer fillers than bars built around heavily processed isolates.

Fiber: aim for 5g or more

Fiber is what keeps you full between meals and supports healthy digestion, and most of us don't get enough. And yes — fiber is technically a carbohydrate. But it's the kind that works for you, not against you: it slows digestion and steadies energy. Don't let the word “carb” on a label scare you off an otherwise excellent high-fiber bar.

Added sugar: the lower the better

Look for single digits, ideally under ~6–8g, and check whether the sugar is added (syrups, cane sugar) or naturally occurring. A bar with 18g of sugar is dessert — which is fine, as long as you know that's what you're eating.

Sugar alcohol sweeteners: know your stomach

Many “low sugar” bars hit their numbers with sugar alcohol sweeteners like erythritol, maltitol, and sorbitol. They can cause bloating and gas for a lot of people. If that's you, “no sugar alcohol sweeteners” on the label is a real plus.

The ingredient list: short and readable

Flip the bar over. A short list of recognizable ingredients — ideally organic and non-GMO — is almost always a better sign than a paragraph of additives.

Certifications worth noting

USDA Organic tells you about how the ingredients were grown. Badges like Certified B Corp and Climate Neutral tell you about the company behind the bar — a nice tiebreaker when two bars are otherwise close.

The 30-second checklist

  • 10g+ protein, from a source you recognize
  • 5g+ fiber
  • Low added sugar (single digits)
  • No sugar alcohol sweeteners (if you're sensitive)
  • A short, readable ingredient list

For what it's worth, this checklist is basically why we keep recommending ALOHA — it quietly hits every box.
